Former Army recruiter convicted of having sex with Northland girl, 15

Chervaldric Williams could face up to 14 years in prison when sentenced Oct. 4.

A Platte County jury convicted a former Army recruiter Wednesday of having sex with a 15-year-old girl.

Chervaldric Williams, 38, had been charged with statutory rape and sodomy in connection with the Oct. 17, 2009, assault.

Authorities said Williams met the girl at the AMC BarryWoods 24 theaters near Interstate 29 and Barry Road. They exchanged cellphone numbers and began to text each other, Platte County Prosecutor Eric Zahnd said.

The victim told authorities she knew Williams because he was a recruiter at Oak Park High School.

Zahnd said Williams picked up the girl after she sneaked out of her house while her parents slept. They had sex in his car and at his apartment.

Her parents noticed she was gone and began frantically calling her friends trying to find her. They called several numbers on her cellphone, including one that belonged to Williams, who initially denied knowing the girl. Williams then called them back and said he was a “stand-up guy” and would do nothing to harm their daughter, Zahnd said.

After the girl returned home, she told her parents what happened. They contacted authorities.

During the trial, Zahnd said, Williams denied any sexual contact with the victim. He said that the girl attempted to sexually assault him, but that he managed to fend off her advances. He was unable to explain how his DNA wound up on her shirt, Zahnd said.

Zahnd said there was no indication Williams was trying to recruit the victim into the Army.

Williams faces up to 14 years in prison when sentenced Oct. 4.
