Shawnee police encountered a familiar little face Sunday when a citizen called them after finding a child wandering alone.

It was the third time this summer that the 3-year-old boy had been found walking alone, police said Monday.

The child was found about 9:15 a.m. in the parking lot of a business near Shawnee Mission Parkway and Lackman Road. Because of the two previous incidents on July 15 and July 29, officers knew that the boy lived in a nearby apartment with his single mother.

On Sunday, the mother was not home. Police left a note on the door. Officials took the boy into protective custody.

The mother didn’t contact police until about 3 p.m. Sunday.

The boy remained in state custody Monday. Police submitted reports of the incident to the Johnson County district attorney to determine if charges could be filed.
