A Kansas City man was convicted Thursday of second-degree murder in the May 2011 killing of another man on Independence Avenue.

A Jackson County Circuit Court jury also found 32-year-old Umar Muhammad guilty of assaulting another person in the same incident, as well as two counts of armed criminal action.

Muhammad shot and killed 25-year-old Mohamed Hussein on May 19, 2011, near Independence and Brooklyn avenues after the men had gotten into a fight several days earlier. Jurors recommended a 30-year sentence on the murder conviction. A judge will sentence him in October.
