A man who flew to Kansas City to visit friends was shot and killed in their front yard before he even reached their front door.
Friends of Pierre Richard Mogene, 35, didn’t know he had arrived until after police found his body about 1:10 a.m. Sunday in the 2600 block of East Eighth Street.
Police think a cab dropped off Mogene, of Fayetteville, N.C., before he was accosted by someone who possibly wanted to rob him. Investigators aren’t sure what happened, because they have not found witnesses.
As the killer was firing at Mogene, a stray bullet entered the friend’s home and wounded a woman inside. The friends called 911 to summon help for her. When officers arrived, they found Mogene in the yard.
“He was in the wrong place at the wrong time,” said Detective Daniel Frazier. “It was just a coincidence he happened to be there. He’s truly an innocent victim.”
Mogene transplanted from Haiti to North Carolina, Frazier said. His parents still live in Haiti.
Anyone with information about the killing should call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS (474-8477). A reward of up to $1,000 is available.
