A Lenexa man was charged Wednesday in federal court with crossing a state line with the intent to have sex with a 12-year-old girl.
John J. McCarthy, 24, was charged in U.S. District Court in Kansas City, where he is expected to make his initial court appearance today.
Kansas City police arrested him Tuesday night after he arrived at an apartment and handed over $60 to an undercover police officer posing as the mother of the fictitious girl, according to court documents.
The officer previously had set up a profile on a website that allows users to post sexually-related stories and pictures. McCarthy contacted her and began discussing his interest in having sex with the daughters she said she had, according to the documents.
When they met at a public place, McCarthy allegedly described what he wanted to do sexually with her daughters. The officer said she had to get something in return and McCarthy agreed to pay her $50, according to the allegations.
He was arrested the next night after showing up for the planned encounter with the girl.
The charge carries a sentence of 15 years to life in federal prison.
