Kansas City police are investigating after a 59-year-old man died of a gunshot in his bed at Truman Medical Center.
Police said a nurse noticed a burning odor, which was later determined to be from gunpowder, coming from a room on the fourth floor about 11 a.m. Saturday. She discovered the man in bed bleeding from the nose. Other staff members were preparing to administer CPR when they realized the patient had a “do not resuscitate” order. He was pronounced dead.
It was then that hospital staff discovered a small handgun under the man’s arm. The staff members called hospital security, which secured the gun for police.
An autopsy will be performed. The case was assigned to the police homicide unit.
