Trooper, the pit bull puppy who was nearly dragged to death on Interstate 55 last November, is recovering after his seventh surgery.
The Missouri Humane Society said Friday that the dog’s latest surgery was July 19 to repair his right knee. Humane Society officials said that after several weeks of recovery, Trooper may be ready for adoption.
Benetta Johnson of East St. Louis, Ill., was found guilty in April of misdemeanor animal abuse and sentenced to probation and community service.
She told police she tried to return the dog to her ex-husband and asked her 13-year-old son to put the dog in the bed of his truck, but the teen instead tied the puppy to the trailer hitch.
Johnson’s ex-husband didn’t see the dog and drove down the interstate.
