Drivers just might want to break out the party hats.
The Kansas Department of Transportation announced that the new ramp that takes eastbound Interstate 435 traffic to southbound U.S. 69 and 119th Street will open Wednesday.
Once the new ramp opens, eastbound drivers on I-435 wanting to take U.S. 69 south will exit off the highway west of the Quivira Road interchange.
They will then continue east through a new tunnel east of Quivira. The road then curves south toward U.S. 69.
Once past the curve, they will head south over the College Boulevard and Indian Creek bridges.
After they pass over the bridges, drivers then choose whether to take the left lane to merge with southbound U.S. 69 traffic or the right lane to exit onto 119th Street.
Signs will direct drivers through the new layout.
The new ramp is part of the $102 million U.S. 69 and I-435 interchange improvement project.
Drivers will see other new ramps opening in August. The project is scheduled to be completed in November 2013.
