The heat gripping Kansas City will continue Friday, but relief is on the way.

Friday’s highs are expected to be in the upper 90s with heat indices in the lower 100s, according the National Weather Service.

In downtown Kansas City, highs are expected to reach 97 degrees.

But a cold front is expected to move into the area later Friday, bringing with it a chance for showers and thunderstorms, primarily in northern Missouri and northeastern Kansas.

Severe weather is not expected with any of the storms that develop.

The cold front is expected to linger, bringing the chance of storms and cooler temperatures this weekend, with the best chance of storms on Sunday.

Highs Saturday are expected to be in the upper 80s to lower 90s, while Sunday’s highs will be a tad cooler, reaching the lower to upper 80s.

Mondays highs are expected to climb back to the mid-80s to low-90s.
