Neighbor charged in slaying of Blue Summit man, 71

A 71-year-old man found slain in Blue Summit has been identified as Roger Krout. He was struck three times in the head with a sharp object, likely a shingler’s hammer.

Jackson County authorities have charged a 39-year-old man in the slaying of a man found Tuesday in a Blue Summit residence.

Ricky L. Sines of Kansas City faces first-degree murder and armed criminal action charges in the death of 71-year-old Roger Krout.

Authorities were called to the house in the 1800 block of Tilden Street Tuesday afternoon, where they discovered Krout’s body. There were obvious signs of a struggle in the house, which had been ransacked.

Krout had been struck three times in the head with a sharp object, according to the Jackson County medical examiner’s office.

Investigators obtained a warrant to search the house where the body was found. They recovered a shingler’s hammer with what appeared to be blood on the end of a sharp edge.

A witness told investigators that Krout paid Sines $50 to mow his lawn. Afterward, Sines and Krout, who lived across the street from each other, drank beer and watched a movie together.

According to court documents, Sines later went back to visit Krout. The charges contend Sines attacked Krout then. Sines was taken into custody Tuesday night.
