The roof of a Kansas City, Kan., apartment building under renovation collapsed late Sunday, forcing 15 people who live next door to evacuate.

The roof collapsed into the building in the 1200 block of North 18th St. about 11:30 p.m.

The building is one of four in a cluster of apartments. Three of the buildings were under renovation and the fourth was occupied, said Deputy Chief Craig Duke, a spokesman for the Kansas City, Kan., Fire Department.

Fire officials decided to evacuate the occupied apartments as a precaution. The walls of the three-story building where the roof collapsed were bowing out.

Engineers are expected to inspect the apartments buildings Monday to determine whether they can be repaired or should be demolished.
