The Kansas City Zoo reports that Nikita, the male polar bear that has been off exhibit for a week because of illness, showed encouraging signs of improvement over the weekend.

Zoo Director Randy Wisthoff said the bear’s behavior is “getting closer to normal” and he is eating and taking his medications. Zoo officials think Nikita has a gastrointestinal ailment.

“With a bit of coaxing by his favorite treat, lard, he jumped into his indoor pool, then later he went into it on his own,” Wisthoff said in a statement.
