A family was forced to escape through a window after a fire suspected of being intentionally set was started early Friday in a Kansas City, Kan., apartment building.

The fire was reported about 1:45 a.m. Friday in the center hallway of the building in the 1600 block of Everett Avenue.

A child discovered the fire and alerted family members who climbed out of a window to escape, according to fire officials. One resident of the building was treated at the scene for minor injuries.

The Red Cross was called to assist four adults and two children displaced by the fire that caused an estimated $50,000 damage.
