A 16-year-old Independence resident has died from injuries sustained after falling off the back of a car Tuesday afternoon.

The teenager, identified by Independence police as Cody Dayberry, was riding on the trunk lid of a 2003 Nissan Altima being driven by another teenager in the Highland Manor Trailer Park, 17311 E. U.S. 40.

Cody reportedly fell or attempted to get off while the car was moving slowly, police said. He hit his head. Authorities transported Cody to an area hospital and then to Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, where he died.

Police continue to investigate.
