A county collector in northwest Missouri says her plan to start shaming property owners into paying overdue taxes is already bringing results.
The Maryville Daily Forum reports Nodaway County collector Marilyn Jenkins plans to put large signs on properties with at least two years' unpaid taxes. The signs have big red letters that read, "Delinquent tax sale. For more information, contact the county collector's office."
The signs won't go up until July 22. But word about them has got out, and Jenkins says property owners are already calling her office to work out payment plans.
Jenkins says she'd rather help landowners pay off their taxes than exercise the county's authority to sell delinquent properties.
As for anyone thinking of removing the signs, Jenkins says doing so would be a misdemeanor.
