The death of a 10-week-old Lafayette County baby is being investigated as a homicide.
Deputies with the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office responded Friday to a home on Linn Road in southwestern Lafayette County concerning an unresponsive infant who was experiencing shortness of breath.
Authorities transported the child to St. Mary’s Hospital in Blue Springs, where doctors discovered injuries. They stabilized the infant before making a transfer to Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, where the child died Monday.
An autopsy performed the following day by the Jackson County Medical Examiner’s Office indicated the infant suffered numerous broken bones, including a skull fracture, contusions and brain damage. The medical examiner determined the death to be a homicide, according to the sheriff’s office.
