Authorities say an Illinois man who led police on a chase in Missouri was shot and killed by officers after he suddenly accelerated his car and pointed a gun at the law enforcers.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says 49-year-old Jose Garcia of Des Plaines near Chicago died at a hospital shortly after the shooting Friday near Eureka.

Garcia reportedly fled from Illinois State Police after multiple traffic violations before a Missouri state trooper spotted him on Interstate 44 southwest of St. Louis, starting a chase. Garcia later exited the freeway and drove through subdivisions before being shot and killed.

The chase included Missouri state, St. Louis County, Eureka and Franklin County authorities.

The Missouri highway patrol is investigating the shooting.
