Jackson County prosecutors on Friday accused a 55-year-old man of hitting a bicyclist he knew with his car, then shooting him in the abdomen.

The 58-year-old victim lost a kidney and part of his liver and colon and must wear a colostomy bag, court records said. He remained in the intensive care unit of a hospital.

Kevin W. Brinston of Kansas City was charged with assault and armed criminal action in connection with the incident Monday afternoon near 31st Street and Prospect Avenue.

According to court records, the victim told police he had argued with Brinston’s wife, who works at a gas station near 31st and Cleveland Avenue. He rode his bicycle away and was on Prospect when Brinston allegedly hit him, knocking him off his bike. Brinston allegedly stepped out of his vehicle, said “Don’t (expletive) with my wife or I’ll kill you,” then shot the victim in the abdomen.

Brinston surrendered to police Wednesday. He remained in jail Friday in lieu of a $250,000 bond.
