Some Missouri lawmakers are seeking to amend the state constitution to enshrine a fundamental right for parents to raise their children as they see fit.
The House gave initial approval Wednesday to a proposal stating that parents have a right to make decisions involving the “discipline, education, religious instruction, health, medical care, place of habitation, and general well-being” of minor children.
House member Todd Richardson, who is sponsoring the amendment, says it is prompted partly by a desire protect the rights of parents to educate their children at home.
A second House vote is needed to send the measure to the Senate. If it passes there, the proposed constitutional amendment would be referred to voters in 2014.
