Man sought for questioning flees KC police, causes four-vehicle crash

Kansas City police tactical officers were trying to stop a person of interest in a homicide when he sped away and caused a crash.

Kansas City police tactical officers chased a driver this afternoon in connection with a homicide investigation, and the driver caused a four-vehicle crash, police said.

Gang Squad investigators in plainclothes were following a vehicle about 2:30 p.m. when the officers confirmed that a person of interest in a homicide was inside the vehicle. The undercover officers asked tactical officers to pull the vehicle over near 85th Street and Wayne Avenue.

The driver stopped but jumped from the vehicle and ran. Meanwhile, the passenger slid into the driver’s seat and sped away. The tactical officers got back in their car and followed. Other officers arrested the driver who had bailed.

The new driver ran a red light at 75th Street and the Paseo and hit three vehicles, seriously damaging two of them and sideswiping the third. His vehicle rolled three times. He tried to flee but was caught by police. He asked to go to a hospital, where he was under police guard this afternoon, police said.

The driver and passenger of a Volvo suffered facial cuts from air bags, and other minor injuries, police said. A parked van that was struck was unoccupied.
