A Kansas City man was shot to death Wednesday afternoon after he intervened in an argument between his niece and her male friend.
Police received several 911 calls about the shooting just after 3:30 p.m. in the parking lot of the Blue Valley Townhomes near 23rd Street and Wheeling Avenue.
Prior to the shooting, the woman received a text message from the friend saying he was coming over to beat her up, police said. She looked outside and saw he was pulling into the parking lot.
Witnesses told police the niece and her friend argued loudly in the parking lot, drawing the attention of the woman’s uncle.
The uncle came outside and tried to protect the woman. The friend shot the uncle, who also had a gun, and sped away in a silver Dodge Avenger, police said.
Police were looking for the gunman, believed to be about 20.
The victim’s name was not released, but police said he was in his late 20s and had a young daughter. Relatives said he often tried to protect family members. He checked on his niece daily and was like a father figure to her two boys, ages 2 and 8. He often took them on weekend outings and was also a father figure to many other young relatives, they said.
