A 60-year-old homeowner shot through his back door and struck a man in the foot Sunday night after the man tried to break in, Kansas City police said.

The homeowner told police that the shooting happened about 8:30 p.m. in the 4000 block of Norton Avenue after an unknown man began beating on the home’s front door. The stranger demanded to see a 31-year-old woman who was at the home. The homeowner refused to open the door and told the man the woman was asleep.

A few minutes later, the homeowner heard someone kicking at his back door. The homeowner called police.

Police think the homeowner shot the man through the door. When officers arrived, they found a man with a bloody foot sitting inside a rear screened-in porch. A shoe found nearby bore holes that corresponded with the man’s wounds.

The man told police that he was highly intoxicated, didn’t know he had been shot and didn’t know who shot him. He later told police he did not want to prosecute the homeowner.
