The street immediately to the south of the former JJ’s restaurant will stay closed through May 1 so Missouri Gas Energy can make repairs to the underground main there, Kansas City officials announced Thursday.
JJ’s was leveled in an explosion Feb. 19 after a contractor punctured a gas pipe under 48th Street. Gas collected inside the restaurant and was ignited, possibly by a pilot light, authorities concluded.
A portion of 48th between Belleview Avenue to Roanoke Parkway has been fenced off ever since. The city referred all questions about the work to MGE, but a spokesman for the company was not immediately available.
The city said the work will close off that block of 48th beginning Monday. It may also lead to lane closures on Belleview north of 48th. Detours will be posted.
