Grandview will not open its outdoor pool this year in Meadowmere Park

Planning is under way for future outdoor aquatics, but pool fell victim to declining attendance, rising costs and other factors.

After 39 years, Grandview is closing its only outdoor pool, which will not open for the summer swimming season.

In a news release, city officials said the decision on the Meadowmere Park pool follows years of declining attendance, rising operating costs, increased competition and non-compliance with new Americans with Disabilities Act standards.

In January, the Board of Aldermen approved an aquatic feasibility study that detailed issues with the current pool and made recommendations for the future. Demolition will begin this spring, and the city parks staff is working on an outdoor aquatics plan for the future.

The Grandview Sharks swim team will move its activities to the indoor pool at The View community center. Swim lessons also will be there.

The city will offer discounted community center memberships for those who want to swim indoors during the summer. Residents also can use the splash area at John Anderson Park.
