Wichita State pulled away from Pitt in the second half today, beating the Panthers 73-55 in their West Region round-of-64 game in Salt Lake City.
With the victory, the ninth-seeded Shockers (27-8) advance to play the winner of today's later game between No. 1-seeded Gonzaga and 16th-seeded Southern on Saturday.
Pitt (24-9) outshot WSU in the first half, but only barely, 28.6 percent to 25. But the Shockers picked it up after the break and finished with 38.8 percent shooting from the field.
Malcolm Armstead led the way with 22 points for Wichita State; Cleanthony Early added 21. Steven Adams led Pitt with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
