A worker at a tire recycling business lost both legs in an industrial accident in northeast Kansas City this morning.

Kansas City firefighters and emergency medical personnel responded shortly after 10 a.m. to ABC Tire Recycling at 4401 Gardner Avenue in the Northeast area.

The cause of the accident was still under investigation, but the victim was either clearing or fell into the shredder, said Kansas City Fire Department spokesman James Garrett.

The victim was trapped by the machine and had to be freed. Both of his legs were amputated, Garrett said.

Garrett declined to release the man’s condition, saying he was still alive when he arrived at the hospital despite the fact the injuries involved two major arteries.
