The snowstorm this morning was heavy enough to even force medical facilities to close.
By about 6 a.m., Children’s Mercy Hospital announced that all its urgent care centers would be closed Thursday and outpatient clinics and same-day surgeries would be available only to patients with confirmed appointments. Emergency services at both Children’s Mercy on Hospital Hill and at Children’s Mercy South continued to be available.
Shawnee Mission Medical Center was keeping its services open, including emergency rooms at its hospital in Merriam and outpatient pavilion in Lenexa. But the hospital’s physician offices and its urgent care clinic at 91st Street and Quivira Road were closed.
Teaching and research functions at the University of Kansas Medical Center were shut down on Thursday. KU Hospital remained open, but the status of physician clinics varied and patients with appointments were advised to call to confirm before setting out.Closings at KU Hospital today included: Jayhawk Primary Care offices (patients were being notified); evening urgent care clinics in Westwood; Gladstone; Kansas City, Kan.; and Shawnee; and Mid-America Cardiology clinics (closing by mid-afternoon; patients were being notified).
Cancer services at KU Hospital continued to be available as needed for patients.
Truman Medical Centers on Hospital Hill and Lakewood were in service Thursday, but the vast majority of patients with appointments had already canceled by Wednesday evening.
Truman’s clinics were remaining open, often with scaled down staffs, spokesman Shane Kovac said. “Most of the clinics are pretty barren,” he said.
Kovac advised patients to call ahead.
That also was the advice given by St. Luke’s Hospital. Many physician practices were either closed or had reduced hours today, spokesman Kerry O’Connor said. Among the St. Luke’s programs closed today are the Women's Center, the sleep lab and a physical fitness center called the Center for Health Enhancement.
