A train collided with a car in Platte County this morning, injuring two motorists.
The accident occurred just before 11 a.m. at Missouri 45 and Missouri 45 Spur at a gated railroad crossing. Initial reports indicate the car’s driver was trying to maneuver around the gates when the car slid in the snow and got stuck in the train’s path.
Two occupants of the car suffered head injuries but were conscious at the scene, said Capt. Erik Holland with the Platte County Sheriff’s Office.
Roadways in the area were “treacherous,” Holland said. Snow plows from Platte County Public Works cleared a path for ambulances to get to the crash scene and then back to Interstate 435 so they could transport the patients to hospitals.
The railroad crossing, which is east of Leavenworth, is on the Burlington Northern Santa Fe rail line.
