Officials at Central Academy of Excellence in the Kansas City school district have cancelled classes and released students early today after a chemical odor filled the building.
The odor is from maintenance work near the pool at the high school at 3221 Indiana Ave., said Andre’ Riley, public relations manager for Kansas City Public Schools.
Crews were working after hours at the school and fumes from one of the chemicals spread throughout the building.
“It’s not toxic, but the smell led to a few students feeling discomfort,” Riley said.
Students were first moved to the school’s auditorium so officials could air out the building. Shortly thereafter, the decision was made to send students home for the day.
Classes are expected to be back in session tomorrow.
