Three bodies found Monday in a Clay County home east of Smithville Lake were apparently the victims of a double murder and suicide, authorities said.
Deputies were called to the residence in the 19000 block of Neth Road about 9 a.m. after a family friend reported seeing a body and blood through a back-door window. The friend went to check on the family after not being able to reach anyone there, Clay County Sheriff Bob Boydston said.
Boydston said those killed were a 14-year-old boy, a woman in her 40s who was the boy’s cousin, and the woman’s husband. They apparently died Thursday or Friday, officials said. Each had been shot in the head.
Their names were not released, pending notification of relatives.
The woman and boy were found in separate bedrooms, apparently killed by the woman’s husband. His body was on the kitchen floor near the back door. The home sits amid farmland north of Missouri 92, Boydston said.
Officials would not discuss whether they found a suicide note, but they said they had recovered prescription drugs and found more than 10 firearms, including an assortment of revolvers, long-barreled firearms and semiautomatic weapons.
Investigators found near the man the weapon they think was used in the shootings. They found no weapons on the other bodies, Boydston said.
Authorities said that the man, who had worked for an airline, had suffered from depression. The woman worked in the home. The couple was in the process of gaining full guardianship of the boy.
Boydston said there had been no police calls to the home or reports of domestic violence.
“For that reason, there is quite a bit of shock,” he said.
School officials had tried to contact the family when the 14-year-old did not show up for class.
