Fifteen area hospitals and clinics in Kansas purchased drugs from the company linked to a deadly meningitis outbreak.
The drugs have not been linked to any adverse effects or contamination, but are part of a precautionary recall by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
There have been 24 deaths and 317 cases of fungal infection linked to injectable drugs produced by the New England Compounding Center. None have been in Kansas or Missouri.
But the compounding center, NECC, produced hundreds of other drugs, as well.
“The FDA has made a nationwide request that any patient receiving any NECC product since May 21st be notified,” according to a statement released Wednesday by the University of Kansas Hospital. “Even though no problems have been associated with the drugs purchased by the hospital and MedWest (in Shawnee) from NECC, the identification of those patients is underway and notification will begin by mail shortly.”
Shawnee Mission Medical Center said it does not use drugs from NECC related to the meningitis outbreak and pulled other products from NECC even before the recall was issued.
The FDA issued a list of hospitals and clinics that purchased drugs from NECC, but cautioned that the list is based on company records and may not be complete. The list does not include any hospitals, clinics or other care providers in Missouri.
