Local and federal authorities are investigating spray-painted racial epithets on the home of a Smithville family earlier this week.
Police said they were called Tuesday to a residence in the 200 block of Double Tree Lane on a home invasion alarm. The homeowner also dialed 911, said Police Chief Jason Lockridge.
Officers found that someone had spray-painted racial slurs on the outside of the home. The front door also was kicked in, Lockridge said.
The homeowner said no one entered the house. No injuries were reported and nothing was taken.
Lockridge said police are investigating the incident as a racially motivated crime and are working with the FBI.
The family has lived in the neighborhood about five years and said they have not been the target of other racial incidents.
“They are at a loss and cannot think of a single reason why anybody would do that,” Lockridge said.
