Police say a Blue Springs man tortured and killed a cat while recording the event on his cellphone.
He told police he killed the animal so he wouldn’t kill himself, according to court records released Friday. He also claimed to be both suicidal and homicidal, the records said.
Prosecutors charged Brandon Scott Krahenbuhl, 23, on Friday with one felony count of animal abuse.
According to court records, Blue Springs police responded about 10:30 p.m. Wednesday to a possible suicide in an apartment in the 2000 block of Southwest Ninth Street. One officer heard Krahenbuhl make suicidal statements before admitting that he had killed a cat and recorded the act.
A detective examined the cellphone video and reported observing a “small gray and white cat being hung from a noose tied in a rope, and the cat hanging and flailing around.”
The cat escaped at one point, but Krahenbuhl caught it. Eventually he slammed the cat into a wall twice with the rope, “causing dents in the sheetrock wall.”
He held the cat up for a brief period, during which it appeared to lose consciousness. He later placed the cat on the ground. After the cat began to twitch, Krahenbuhl “put his foot on the cat and pushed down hard.”
Authorities found the cat’s body in a trash bin behind the apartment.
Officers determined that Krahenbuhl’s 3-month-old daughter had been in his care when he killed the cat.
