Firefighters battled record heat as they also attacked a blaze that destroyed the Comfort Inn motel in Blue Springs on Friday.
The fire was reported about 3:30 p.m. and firefighters were still battling flames on the third floor four hours later. Officials had not yet determined a cause. The Central Jackson County Fire Protection District was assisted by crews from Independence and Lee’s Summit. There were no reports of injuries among people who were in the building or firefighters.
“Everybody’s been doing really well, staying hydrated and rotating,” Eddie Saffell, assistant chief of the fire protection district, said of the fire crews.
The motel is at 1501 N.W. Northridge Drive, just off Missouri 7 north of Interstate 70. Nineteen units at the motel were occupied. The guests were given accommodations at the Comfort Inn in Grain Valley.
It was the second large structure fire in Blue Springs in three days. On Wednesday a blaze displaced about 20 people from the Autumn Place Apartments on Candletree Drive. The cause of that fire is undetermined.
