A teenage girl is dead from drugs.
Her husband, a soldier in the U.S. Army, sits in jail in south Missouri, charged with murdering a man he believed was having sex with her.
And now, a 46-year-old Belton woman is in another jail, arrested Tuesday for allegedly providing drugs to the teenager. Authorities say Glenda K. Stevens sold the girl the Xanax that killed her.
Two dead, two in jail, and it all started a hot day last summer at a swimming party.
On July 27, police found the body of Amber Cannon at the Rodeway Inn in Grandview. Her mother said the girl had gone to the motel with friends so they could use the pool. Family members also believed drugs had played a role in her death.
On a morning a week later, Justin Cannon, 21, of Peculiar, cried at his wife’s funeral in Belton. He had returned home from an Army base in Georgia.
But at the same that Justin Cannon mourned his wife, investigators a hundred miles away searched Truman Lake for a man reported missing the day earlier. When they found the body of Michael Griggs, 24, later that day, they discovered heavy damage to the back of his head.
By that evening, Justin Cannon would be sitting in the St. Clair County Jail in Osceola, Mo. Witnesses told investigators that Cannon and Griggs had a verbal altercation during the previous night about Griggs’ relationship with Amber Cannon.
Griggs had gone camping with six friends.
Initially, Cannon told investigators that he’d seen Griggs head to the restroom and did not see him return. But later, after the body was found, he admitted sneaking up on Griggs and hitting him in the back of the head with a rock. He then carried the body into a cove, according to court documents.
Cannon, charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action, has a trial set for Feb. 5, 2013.
On Tuesday, deputies with the Cass County Sheriff’s Office arrested Stevens after a grand jury handed down an indictment charging her with involuntary manslaughter and distribution of a controlled substance to a minor.
According to the Jackson County medical examiner, Amber Cannon died of acute alprazolam intoxication.
Stevens is being held in the Cass County Jail on $50,000 bond.
