The official opening of the “Tunnel to Nowhere” wasn’t until Wednesday afternoon, but drivers have been driving through it since Saturday.
The tunnel, which was built in 2005, is paired with the newly constructed “Tunnel to Somewhere” to form the 75th Street exit from Interstate 35.
The collector-distributor exit ramp was built as part of a U.S. 69 reconstruction project to alleviate congestion on I-35 caused by traffic exiting at 75th.
Now northbound I-35 motorists wishing to exit take the 87th Street ramp, go through the tunnels and then follow a road that parallels I-35 to get to 75th.
A ribbon-cutting marking the official opening is at 3 p.m. today at a cul-de-sac on the northeast corner of the I-35 and 87th Street interchange.
