An Independence man found shot to death Friday in his Truman Road thrift shop was a longtime vendor of tamales at the same location.

Mark Turley, 50, “was quite well known out there,” said Jim VanZandt, the third-generation owner of Jim’s Hot Tamales.

For about 15 years on weekends, “I made the tamales and he bought them and resold them” from a cart outside the thrift shop on the 3900 block of Truman Road, VanZandt said.

Turley acquired the shop a few years ago and extended his tamale business to six days a week, said VanZandt: “He put the two together and tried to make ends meet, just like everyone.”

Kansas City police said Turley’s body was found about 5:15 p.m. Friday. No further details were provided Saturday, and police urged anyone with information to call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS (8477).
