Searchers on Monday morning found the drowned body of a 40-year-old man who had gone missing Sunday afternoon while swimming in the Kansas River near the boat ramp at De Soto.
Rogelio Paredes-Nino was one of two men who had gone into the river around 5 p.m. Sunday reportedly to help a child who they thought might be in trouble in the current. The child returned to shore safely and one of the two men made it to shore, but a call to 911 went out to help find Paredes-Nino.
Multiple agencies came to the riverside to aid in the search Sunday, and the Kansas City Police Department sent a helicopter, but crews suspended the search once darkness fell as family looked on. Searchers saw the body about 10 a.m. Monday. The death is considered an accidental drowning, officials said, but it remains under investigation.
