The storms that brought torrential downpours dropped a record 3.47 inches of rain at Kansas City International Airport on Wednesday.
That broke the old Aug. 6 record of 1.77 inches set in 1959, according to the National Weather Service.
Wednesday’s rainfall also was the second greatest 24-hour rainfall total since 3.74 inches fell Sept. 12, 2008.
Rain totals across the area varied, with 3.21 inches falling at Kansas City’s Downtown Airport, 1.61 inches at Johnson County Airport; 1.79 inches at New Century AirCenter; 1.77 inches at Chillicothe; .63 inches at Kirksville; 2.29 inches at Sedalia and 2.94 inches at Lee’s Summit.
A flood warning has been issued for Blackwater River at Valley Center in Johnson and Pettis counties and near Blue Lick in Cooper and Saline counties in Missouri.
A flood advisory has been issued for northern Benton, northern Morgan, and eastern Bourbon and Vernon counties in Missouri.
The storm also left thousands of people in the dark.
As of 7:45 a.m., Kansas City Power & Light was reporting 4,775 customers without power.
The hardest hit areas were Johnson County, where 1,826 customers were without power, and Jackson County, where 1,960 were without power.
The Kansas City, Kan., Board of Public Utilities was reporting 343 customers without power.
Westar Energy was reporting that 248 customers lacked power in Leavenworth County.
Drier weather is expected to return to much of the Kansas City area Thursday. Highs will be in the middle 80s.
Isolated showers and thunderstorms will be possible Thursday, but widespread severe weather is not expected. A few strong storms may develop later Thursday afternoon and in the early evening, especially across central and south-central Missouri.
Rain is expected to return by the weekend, with a 20 percent chance Friday, 50 percent chance Sunday and 20 percent chance Monday, according to the National Weather Service.
The threat for widespread severe weather is low. Highs this weekend should be in the middle 80s.
