New movie includes KC musician

More News

A movie directed by actress Connie Stevens includes an appearance by musician Lonnie McFadden of Kansas City.

McFadden portrays “Rev. Dupree” in Stevens’ production of “Saving Grace B. Jones,” a movie shot in Boonville, Mo., two years ago.

While McFadden was on his way to work one day, his agent, Kathy Hanis of Kansas City, called him and asked him to stop by her home. There, McFadden filmed an audition and Hanis sent the tape in.

“The next thing we knew, we got a call back from Connie Stevens, who said she wanted me,” McFadden said. “She did want me to grow a beard. That’s why I was wearing one a couple of years ago.”

Working with Stevens left an impression on McFadden.

“She is one of the most unassuming people you’ve ever meet,” McFadden said. “You would never know this was Connie Stevens, the big star that had been in movies with Elvis and all of that. You would never know that if you sat down and talked to her. When she would introduce me to people, she would introduce me like I was a star. She really is a dynamite person.”

The movie premiere will be Nov. 20 at the St. Louis Art Museum and in Boonville on Nov. 21 at the Lyric Theater.

The executive director of the Women’s Foundation of Greater Kansas City hopes the findings of a recent study help guide other agencies in their work.

The foundation recently released a report that found that many girls and women in the Kansas City area need career and financial literacy as well as improved access to health care.

“We did it because we want to help women,” said Dawn Oliver, executive director of the foundation. “Hopefully this study will not only guide us in our work but guide all the other organizations out there as well.”

LaTanya Patton, president and CEO of the Black Healthcare Coalition of Greater Kansas City, didn’t find many surprises in the report.

“You’d like to think that in 2009 the playing field would be a little more equal,” Patton said.

Kimble Anders, the former Kansas City Chiefs running back who was named Kansas City School District athletic director, is enjoying his new post.

Anders had been the head football coach at Northeast High School since May. In September he was named district athletic director.

“It’s a lot of fun,” Anders said. “What’s new to me is the administrative side. Dealing with the budget. But it’s still the same thing. You’re still dealing with the kids. You’re trying to improve coaching. You’re trying to improve facilities. But this is something I’ve been around my entire life.”
