Dream is a reality for boutique owner in P&L District

More News

Zafar Salon, Spa and Boutique, a black-owned business, held its grand opening Friday in the Kansas City Power & Light District.

Zafar offers services for men and women, including 10 hair-care stations, manicures, pedicures, skin care and massage services. It also features a women’s boutique with casual and professional clothing and swim wear.

Zafar is owned by Annette Jones of Kansas City, a licensed cosmetologist.

The business occupies 3,000 square feet on the west side of Main Street, between 13th and 14th streets.

“I think it’s a great opportunity for me,” Jones said this week. “To be the first salon and spa in the district, that’s going to be awesome in itself.”

One day Jones took a nap and dreamed of owning a boutique named Zafar.

“In my dream, it was a place that people were flocking to get their hair and nails done,” Jones said. “Then I woke and decided to do it. I am truly following my dreams.”

Jones previously operated a boutique in Louisville, Ky., before moving to Kansas City.

On Nov. 5, Alvin Sykes will receive the Whittaker Award from the Lawyers Association of Kansas City. That day is also the 29th anniversary of the death of Steve Harvey, the saxophonist who was murdered at the Liberty Memorial as he practiced his saxophone.

“I am truly honored to be the first non-high school graduate, second non-lawyer and second African-American to receive this important award,” Sykes said. “But I am proudest of the fact that this group composed of mostly white attorneys would believe that the Till Bill is a good thing for the administration of justice in this country.”

The Till Bill is legislation that pays for investigations into civil rights violation. Sykes led the effort in that legislation.

Also on Nov. 5 — from 5-8 p.m. — the Emmett Till Justice Campaign will hold its “Truth and Justice” rally at the Bruce R. Watkins Cultural Heritage Center. Keith Beauchamp, a film maker from New York, will present his movie “Murder in Black and White, Rev. George Lee.”.

Another Nov. 5 event:

Linda Ronstadt will perform at the Midland Theatre in an effort to assist Our Lady of Guadalupe School and help produce homegrown Mariachi musicians.

Ronstadt will revisit the deeply personal “Songs of My Father.” Many of the songs were passed along to the singer from her father and are indigenous folk songs of Sonora, Mexico.

Tickets range from $27.75 to $99.75 and are available at the Midland Theatre box office, through Ticketmaster outlets or by telephone at 800-745-3000.
