Kansas City-based Burns & McDonnell has continued its rise in the ranks of America’s “100 Best Companies to Work For,” published by Fortune magazine.
The employee-owned engineering company said Thursday that it ranks 14th on the new 2014 list, up from 18th in 2013 and 26th in 2012. It first appeared on the list at No. 50 in 2009.
China Gorman, chief executive of Great Place to Work, the company that creates the rankings, said: “People should take note of the companies on this list. These will be the companies that attract and retain the most skilled, loyal and innovative employees in the coming years.”
Greg Graves, Burns & McDonnell chief executive, said the company’s success “traces back to the quality of people who work here.”
Companies apply for the list and are evaluated by Great Place to Work, using random employee surveys and in-depth questionnaires answered by company officials about their programs and practices. Eventual ratings are based on five perceived criteria: credibility, respect, fairness, pride and camaraderie.
Burns & McDonnell’s employee surveys cited the willingness to work hard, trust in each other, interesting projects, lots of responsibility, good opportunity for learning and advancement, a strong community spirit and a good work-life balance.
“We believe there is a direct connection between doing great work for clients and being the kind of company where people want to work,” said Don Greenwood, president of the Burns & McDonnell Construction Design/Build group. “In our business, we win or lose based on how our people perform on the job site. We demand a lot from our people, so it’s vitally important that we turn around and invest in them.”
Burns & McDonnell said it hired 700 employees last year, ending the year with more than 4,300 workers. About 2,400 work in the Kansas City headquarters. The rest are in more than 30 offices worldwide. The company has been employee-owned for 28 years.
Many other companies on the “best companies” list have some employees in the Kansas City area, but Burns & McDonnell is the only Kansas City-based entity to appear this year.
Examples from the top 100 list of other companies with widespread locations include Google, Edward Jones, Whole Foods, QuikTrip, Carmax, Marriott, Deloitte, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Ernst & Young, KPMG, Nordstrom, Accenture, Cheesecake Factory and Hyatt Hotels.
