Observers say just short of 20,000 Teamsters cast ballots in the contract extension vote for the union workers at YRC Worldwide Inc.

Teamsters for a Democratic Union, a group independent of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, said officials picked up 19,483 mail-in ballots from the post office early Wednesday and about 150 more on a final check.

The count is expected to take the rest of the day and much of Thursday. But the independent Teamsters group plans to post results for each union local as they are completed.

. In that vote, YRC’s Teamsters employees approved the current contract terms through March 2015.

YRC Worldwide, based in Overland Park, has asked its roughly 26,000 Teamsters workers to extend that concessions-laden contract into 2019 and make other changes. The Fortune 500 company said it needs the vote to convince lenders to refinance debts the company can’t repay.
