Except for Raleigh, N.C., Kansas City is the best city in the country for workers, according to combined rankings based on job openings, cost of living and employee satisfaction.
The list by Glassdoor.com, a free website that posts salary details, company reviews and interview questions, is based on its own formula, which partly involves anonymously posted information and comments by employees and job hunters.
It also used active job listings posted on its own site, population data from the U.S. Office of Management and Budget, and median home value according to Zillow to create its ratings.
Hiring opportunities were determined by the ratio of Glassdoor’s active job postings to metro area population. The cost of living was determined by the ratio of median posted salaries to median home value in the metro area. Job satisfacton was based on at least 1,000 company reviews submitted by employees from April 2014 to April 2015.
Glassdoor’s raw data for Kansas City showed 28,786 job postings, a median base salary of $46,000, and a median home value of $138,500. It produced a job satisfaction rating of 3.2, based on a 5-point scale. (The highest job satisfaction rating for any of the top 25 cities in the report was 3.5, tallied for San Jose and San Francisco.)
Along with Raleigh and Kansas City, the other top-rated cities according to the website’s formula were Oklahoma City, Austin, Texas, Seattle and Salt Lake City.
