Three Kansas City-area funeral homes must be sold to satisfy regulatory antitrust concerns resulting from the merger of the nation’s two largest funeral providers.
Houston-based Service Corp. International, which operates the nation’s largest funeral home business, acquired Stewart Enterprises of New Orleans, the second largest chain, for about $1.1 billion. The acquisition, which was announced this spring, was formally completed Monday.
Stewart operated two Kansas City area funeral businesses that will be sold: Johnson County Funeral Chapel & Memorial Gardens, 11200 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park and Overland Park Chapel, 8201 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park.
Service Corp. International operated Mount Moriah Terrace Park Funeral Home & Cemetery, 801 N.W. 108th St., Kansas City.
The two companies agreed to the sale terms required by the Federal Trade Commission and attorneys general in Missouri, Texas, Florida, Tennessee, North Carolina, Maryland and Pennsylvania.
Additional divestitures are expected to be ordered in 14 other states as part of the acquisition settlement, according to a statement from Missouri Attorney General Chris Koster.
