Garmin climbs 3.6 percent; Sprint falls

Most regional stocks finished higher to start the week. Capitol Federal, DST and H&R Block were among the leaders.

Most regional stocks started off the week with a good day on Monday, as averages overall climbed.

The top percentage gainer among regional stocks was Garmin, which climbed 3.6 percent.

Other notables were Capitol Federal, H Block, Waddell Reed, and DST.

Among the losers, Sprint fell 1.4 percent. Cerner was unchange.

Overall stocks closed higher as traders hope that the Federal Reserve will decide to continue its economic stimulus program when it meets this week.

The Standard Poor's 500 index climbed 12 points, or 0.8 percent, to close at 1,639 Monday. Energy and technology stocks rose the most.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 109 points, or 0.7 percent, to 15,179.

The Nasdaq composite rose 28 points, or 0.8 percent, to 3,452.

The BATS 1000 rose 125.79 points, or 0.69 percent, to close at 18,380.21.

Traders think Fed officials will determine that the economy isn't recovering fast enough. That could influence the Fed to keep interest rates low to encourage borrowing and spending.

Two stocks rose for every one that fell on the New York Stock Exchange. Volume was lighter than average at 3.1 billion shares.

Regional stocks

Capitol Federal Financial rose 17 cents, or 1.43%, to close at $12.05.

Cerner Corp. rose 0 cents, or 0.00%, to close at $98.22.

Commerce Bancshares Inc. rose 30 cents, or 0.70%, to close at $43.32.

Compass Minerals fell 21 cents, or 0.25%, to close at $85.26.

DST Systems Inc. rose 89 cents, or 1.33%, to close at $67.98.

Ferrellgas Partners L.P. fell 29 cents, or 1.30%, to close at $21.98.

Garmin Ltd. rose $1.22, or 3.62%, to close at $34.94.

Great Plains Energy fell 5 cents, or 0.22%, to close at $22.92.

H Block Inc. rose 24 cents, or 0.84%, to close at $28.87.

Inergy L.P. rose 19 cents, or 0.79%, to close at $24.11.

Kansas City Life Insurance Co. rose 21 cents, or 0.55%, to close at $38.18.

Kansas City Southern fell 62 cents, or 0.56%, to close at $109.98.

Layne Christensen Co. rose 37 cents, or 1.85%, to close at $20.33.

O'Reilly Automotive Inc. rose 39 cents, or 0.35%, to close at $111.95.

Sprint Nextel Corp. fell 10 cents, or 1.37%, to close at $7.22.

UMB Financial Corp. fell 14 cents, or 0.27%, to close at $52.01.

Waddell Reed Financial Corp. rose 71 cents, or 1.54%, to close at $46.86.

YRC Worldwide Inc. fell 20 cents, or 0.88%, to close at $22.51.
