Most regional stocks surged Thursday, ending a week of pre-summer doldrums.
Kansas City Southern was among the leaders, gaining 3.7 percent. Other moves included Cerner, up 1.9 percent; Garmin, up 1.5 percent; Capitol Federal, up 1.5 percent; and O’Reilly Automotive, up 1.3 percent.
Sprint fell 3 cents, or .4 percent.
Overall, Wall Street rallied as investors focus on positive news about the U.S. economy.
The Dow Jones industrial average ended up 180 points, or 1.2 percent, at 15,176 Thursday.
The market got off to a weak start, then rose steadily throughout the day. The advance accelerated in the last hour. The Dow is coming off its first three-day slump since December.
The Standard Poor's 500 index gained 23 points, or 1.5 percent, to 1,636. The Nasdaq composite rose 44 points, or 1.3 percent, to 3,445.
The BATS 1000 rose 274.52 points, or 1.52 percent, to close at 18,350.02.
The number of Americans seeking unemployment benefits fell last week, and retail sales increased 0.6 percent in May from April.
Five stocks rose for every one that fell on the New York Stock Exchange. Volume was average at 3.4 billion shares.
Capitol Federal Financial rose 18 cents, or 1.52%, to close at $12.05.
Cerner Corp. rose $1.80, or 1.85%, to close at $98.90.
Commerce Bancshares Inc. rose 34 cents, or 0.78%, to close at $43.76.
Compass Minerals rose 42 cents, or 0.49%, to close at $85.44.
DST Systems Inc. rose 50 cents, or 0.76%, to close at $66.68.
Ferrellgas Partners L.P. rose 3 cents, or 0.14%, to close at $22.21.
Garmin Ltd. rose 52 cents, or 1.53%, to close at $34.61.
Great Plains Energy rose 42 cents, or 1.88%, to close at $22.74.
H Block Inc. rose 8 cents, or 0.28%, to close at $28.91.
Inergy L.P. rose 16 cents, or 0.69%, to close at $23.34.
Kansas City Life Insurance Co. rose 46 cents, or 1.21%, to close at $38.47.
Kansas City Southern rose $3.92, or 3.65%, to close at $111.45.
Layne Christensen Co. rose 56 cents, or 2.78%, to close at $20.70.
