Spirit Airlines, the low-cost carrier known for extra fees and cheeky ads, is now pouring wine out of aluminum cans. Starting this week, passengers can buy white moscato or strawberry moscato wine from Friends Fun Wine, an Aventura, Fla., company. Spirit will continue to sell mini-bottles of Sutter Home wine.
The can of wine is larger — 250 milliliters to the bottle’s 187 — but it doesn’t pack as much punch. The canned wine is 6 percent alcohol by volume. Sutter Home is 13 percent.
Spirit likes the cans because they are easier to stack and store on airplanes with limited storage space. They also weigh less, and airlines work to make their planes lighter to save on fuel.Mobile sales up
Google Inc.’s YouTube has tripled advertising sales on mobile devices in the past six months, the company said, contributing as much as $350 million to the video sharing website’s revenue. About a quarter of YouTube’s 1 billion global users now access the service on handheld devices, spurring an increase in promotional spending to reach that audience.
With faster wireless networks and accelerating adoption of smartphones and tablets, U.S. mobile video ad sales are projected to expand to $2.69 billion in 2017, up more than 10-fold from last year, according to EMarketer Inc.
YouTube generates about 10 percent of Google’s total revenue, according to an estimate by Martin Pyykkonen, an analyst at Wedge Partners Corp. Based on Google’s $14 billion in sales in the latest quarter and Pyykkonen’s estimate that mobile contributed 20 percent to 25 percent to YouTube, as much as $350 million in sales probably came from mobile video ads.Phone summit
Top law enforcement officials from San Francisco and New York plan to meet June 13 with representatives of Apple, Google, Samsung Electronics and Microsoft and urge them to create technology to permanently and quickly disable stolen smartphones, making them worthless to thieves.
San Francisco District Attorney George Gascon noted that more than half of the robberies in his city involved a cellphone. Two weeks ago, for example, a 27-year old tourist there was stabbed severely in the face and throat by robbers taking his iPhone.New Cabela’s
Cabela’s plans to build stores in Cheektowaga, N.Y., and Lubbock, Texas, in 2014. A store is set to open in Berlin, Mass., in 2015. The Cheektowaga store, near Buffalo, will be the company’s first one in New York. The Berlin store is near Boston and will be the first Cabela’s in Massachusetts.
The locations are part of the 16 stores Cabela’s plans to open over the next two years. All the new stores use the company’s smaller format designed to fit within a mall or shopping center.
Cabela’s already has 44 stores in the U.S. and Canada.
