The Internal Revenue Service, which operates a major service and processing center in Kansas City, will be closed Friday and four other days this summer because of federal budget constraints.
All IRS operations will also be closed, and workers will be furloughed on June 14, July 5, July 22 and Aug. 30. The agency said it might announce one or two additional closing dates later this year. The closures include all IRS toll-free hotlines, the nearly 400 taxpayer assistance centers nationwide and the taxpayer advocate service.
The IRS said taxpayers should continue to file their returns and pay any taxes due as usual because the closures will not affect tax filing deadlines for quarterly payments, late filings and other issues. The agency said it will be unable to accept or acknowledge receipt of any electronically filed returns on any day it is shut down.
