Most regional stocks close lower, led by YRC, DST, KC Southern

A down day on Wall Street spilled over into regional stocks Wednesday.

The biggest regional percentage losers included YRC, down 3.8 percent; Kansas City Southern, down 3.1 percent; Waddell Reed, down 2.7 percent; Compass Minerals, down 2.1 percent; and Garmin, down 2.8 percent.

The only major regional company that gained ground was Ferrellgas partners, which closed up .5 percent or 11 cents.

Overall, stocks closed lower on news that several Federal Reserve policymakers favored cutting back on stimulus programs as early as June if the economy continues to improve.

The release of minutes of the Fed's April 30-May 1 meeting reversed a surge earlier in the day.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 80 points to 15,307 Wednesday, a loss of 0.5 percent. It had risen 154 points after Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke told Congress it was too early to cut back on the Fed's bond-buying program.

The Standard Poor's 500 fell 13 points to 1,655, or 0.8 percent. The Nasdaq composite fell 38 points to 3,463, or 1.1 percent.

Three stocks fell for every one that rose on the New York Stock Exchange. Volume was heavy at 4.3 billion shares.

The BATS 1000 fell 183.05 points, or 0.97 percent, to close at 18,616.73.

Regional stocks

Capitol Federal Financial fell 12 cents, or 0.99%, to close at $11.99.

Cerner Corp. fell $1.38, or 1.41%, to close at $96.25.

Commerce Bancshares Inc. fell 40 cents, or 0.92%, to close at $43.27.

Compass Minerals fell $1.86, or 2.08%, to close at $87.55.

DST Systems Inc. fell $1.62, or 2.29%, to close at $69.20.

Ferrellgas Partners L.P. rose 11 cents, or 0.52%, to close at $21.21.

Garmin Ltd. fell $1.04, or 2.84%, to close at $35.63.

Great Plains Energy fell 41 cents, or 1.69%, to close at $23.86.

H Block Inc. fell 45 cents, or 1.52%, to close at $29.19.

Inergy L.P. fell 26 cents, or 1.04%, to close at $24.72.

Kansas City Life Insurance Co. fell 34 cents, or 0.90%, to close at $37.47.

Kansas City Southern fell $3.51, or 3.08%, to close at $110.27.

Layne Christensen Co. fell 70 cents, or 3.14%, to close at $21.56.

O'Reilly Automotive Inc. fell $1.65, or 1.47%, to close at $110.56.

Sprint Nextel Corp. fell 9 cents, or 1.22%, to close at $7.30.

UMB Financial Corp. fell 88 cents, or 1.65%, to close at $52.31.

Waddell Reed Financial Corp. fell $1.25, or 2.65%, to close at $45.89.

YRC Worldwide Inc. fell 88 cents, or 3.82%, to close at $22.17.
